Spring Development Check: Are Your Child’s Milestones Blooming?

Spring is the season when everything starts growing again — flowers, grass, pollen (unfortunately)… and children.

Parents often notice developmental changes around spring because routines shift, kids play outside more, and daycare/school transitions happen.

But sometimes parents also notice something else:

“My child still isn’t talking like the others.”
“They trip a lot when they run.”
“They avoid playing with other kids.”

These are often the moments when families begin asking questions about developmental milestones. Click below to view our pediatric milestones guides.

Spring Milestones to Watch

Spring activities actually highlight many developmental skills. Spring is one of the most important seasons for early childhood development because it naturally encourages children to move, explore, and engage with the world around them. Warmer temperatures, longer days, and blooming landscapes invite little ones outdoors where they can run, climb, dig, and play—activities that build gross motor skills, coordination, and strength. Outdoor play also supports sensory development as children feel grass under their feet, hear birds and wind, see vibrant colors, and experience new smells and textures. For young children, especially those working on developmental milestones, spring provides the perfect environment for practicing communication, social interaction, and problem-solving during unstructured play. Simply put, sunshine and fresh air are powerful tools for growth—helping children build confidence, curiosity, and healthy bodies while turning everyday outdoor moments into meaningful developmental opportunities.

When Parents Should Pause and Look Closer

There are moments when parents may feel the need to pause and take a closer look at their child’s development. Every child grows and learns at their own pace, but sometimes small signs can suggest that a little extra support may be helpful. If a child is missing developmental milestones, struggling to communicate, having difficulty with coordination, sensory processing, attention, or social interaction, it may be a good time to consider a pediatric therapy evaluation.

      • Consider a screening if your child:
      • Isn’t using 2-word phrases by age 2
      • Struggles with coordination or balance
      • Has frequent emotional meltdowns
      • Avoids social interaction
      • Loses skills they previously had
