Pediatric Anxiety

What is Pediatric Anxiety?

Pediatric anxiety is more than occasional worry or nervousness. It is a mental health condition where a child’s fears, worries, or anxious thoughts become so frequent or intense that they interfere with everyday life, including school, friendships, family activities, sleep, or hobbies.

It is normal for children to experience fears at different developmental stages. For example, a preschooler may be afraid of the dark, while an older child may feel nervous before a test. Anxiety becomes a concern when those fears are excessive, persistent, and begin affecting a child’s daily functioning.

Pediatric Down Syndrome Signs & Symptoms

Children often express anxiety differently than adults. Some may not have the words to explain what they’re feeling.

Emotional Signs

  • Excessive worrying about everyday situations
  • Frequent fears that seem out of proportion
  • Irritability or frequent emotional outbursts
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Perfectionism or fear of making mistakes
  • Constant need for reassurance

Physical Therapy

  • Frequent stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause
  • Muscle tension
  • Racing heart or rapid breathing
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in appetite

Behavioral Signs

  • Avoiding school or social activities
  • Clinging to parents or caregivers
  • Refusing to try new activities
  • Meltdowns before transitions
  • Difficulty separating from parents
  • Repetitive questions seeking reassurance

What Causes Pediatric Anxiety?

There is rarely a single cause. Anxiety often develops from a combination of factors, including:

  • Genetics or family history of anxiety
  • Differences in brain chemistry
  • Stressful life events
  • Major life transitions
  • Academic pressures
  • Medical conditions
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Trauma or adverse experiences

How Therapy Smarts Helps Children with Anxiety

At Therapy Smarts, we understand that every child experiences anxiety differently. Some children worry constantly, while others show anxiety through behavior changes, physical complaints, or difficulty participating in everyday activities. Our multidisciplinary team works together to identify each child’s unique needs and create a personalized treatment plan that helps them build confidence, resilience, and healthy coping skills.

Pediatric Mental Health Counseling

Our licensed mental health professionals provide evidence-based therapy in a safe, supportive, and child-friendly environment. Through approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), play-based interventions, and emotional regulation strategies, children learn to:

  • Recognize and understand their emotions
  • Identify anxiety triggers
  • Challenge anxious thoughts
  • Develop healthy coping skills
  • Build self-confidence
  • Improve problem-solving abilities
  • Strengthen emotional regulation
  • Practice relaxation and mindfulness techniques

Parents are also included throughout the process, learning strategies they can use at home to support their child’s progress.

Occupational Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety often affects more than emotions—it can impact how children process sensory information, transition between activities, and complete everyday tasks. Occupational therapy can help children:

  • Improve emotional regulation
  • Develop self-calming strategies
  • Learn sensory regulation techniques
  • Increase flexibility during transitions
  • Build independence with daily routines
  • Improve executive functioning skills
  • Increase confidence during new experiences

Our occupational therapists create individualized sensory and regulation plans that help children feel more successful throughout their day.

Speech-Language Therapy

Some children with anxiety struggle to communicate their thoughts, feelings, or needs. Speech-language therapy can help improve:

  • Social communication skills
  • Conversational confidence
  • Self-advocacy
  • Understanding nonverbal communication
  • Perspective-taking
  • Problem-solving during peer interactions

Improved communication often leads to greater confidence in school, friendships, and community activities.

Psychological Evaluations

If a child is experiencing significant anxiety, our psychological evaluation services can help determine:

  • Whether an anxiety disorder is present
  • The severity of symptoms
  • Co-occurring concerns such as ADHD, learning differences, autism spectrum disorder, or depression
  • Recommendations for therapy, school supports, and accommodations

An accurate diagnosis helps families receive the most appropriate treatment and resources.
