Pediatric Spina Bifida

What is Spina Bifida?

Learning that your child has spina bifida can feel overwhelming, but many children with spina bifida lead active, happy, and fulfilling lives with the right medical care, therapy, and family support. Early intervention plays an important role in helping children build strength, independence, communication skills, and confidence.

Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s spinal column does not completely close during early pregnancy. This leaves part of the spinal cord or nerves exposed or improperly formed, affecting how the brain communicates with the body.

Spina bifida is one of the most common neural tube defects and can range from very mild to more severe forms.

Types of Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida Occulta

  • Mildest form
  • Small opening in the spine
  • Often no noticeable symptoms
  • Sometimes discovered accidentally on an X-ray

Meningocele

  • Protective membranes push through the spinal opening
  • The spinal cord usually remains in place
  • Surgery often repairs the defect successfully

Myelomeningocele

  • Most severe and most common form requiring ongoing treatment
  • Spinal cord and nerves extend through the opening
  • Can cause weakness, paralysis, bladder and bowel difficulties, and other medical concerns

Signs & Symptoms of Spina Bifida

Symptoms depend on where the spinal opening occurs and how much the spinal cord is affected.
