What Is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?
Pediatric occupational therapy helps children develop the skills they need to succeed in their daily lives. This can include learning how to play, dress themselves, write, interact with others, and participate in school activities.
Occupational therapists focus on helping children improve important developmental skills such as:
- Fine motor skills (holding a pencil, using scissors, buttoning clothes)
- Sensory processing and regulation
- Hand-eye coordination and visual-motor integration
- Self-care skills like dressing and feeding
- Social participation and emotional regulation

For children, their “occupations” are the activities that fill their day—playing, learning, and interacting with others. Occupational therapy supports kids when those activities become difficult due to developmental delays, sensory challenges, injuries, or neurological conditions.
