The first week of school is exciting but it can also bring big feelings for kids and parents alike. New teachers, new routines, different classmates, earlier mornings, and more structured days can take some getting used to. During this transition, one of the most powerful things parents can give their children is a safe place to talk, decompress, and feel supported.
Here are a few simple ways to provide extra emotional support during the first week of school.
Start With Positive Words of Affirmation
A few encouraging words before school can help your child start the day feeling supported and confident. Try phrases like:
- “I believe in you.”
- “You can do hard things.”
- “You don’t have to be perfect—just do your best.”
- “It’s okay to ask for help.”
- “I’m proud of you for trying.”
- “Your feelings are important.”
- “No matter what happens today, I’m here for you.”
- “You are kind, capable, and loved.”
Consider making one affirmation of your family’s phrase of the week and saying it together each morning.
Ask Questions That Go Beyond “How Was School?”
“Good” or “fine” may be all you get when you ask how school went! Instead, try questions that give your child an opportunity to share more:
- What made you smile today?
- What was your favorite part of the day?
- Was anything hard today?
- Who did you spend time with?
- Did anything make you feel worried, frustrated, or sad?
- What is something you are proud of yourself for today?
- Did you learn something interesting?
- Is there anything you want my help with tomorrow?
And remember: your child may not be ready to talk immediately after school. Give them time to have a snack, play, move their body, or simply relax before asking lots of questions.
Create a Calm Place to Land
After holding it together throughout the school day, some children have bigger emotions when they get home. That’s okay.Keep the first week as simple as possible. Make room for downtime, outdoor play, family meals, earlier bedtimes, cuddles, reading together, or a favorite activity. Most importantly, remind your child that home is their safe place to be themselves.
Celebrate the Little Wins
The first week doesn’t have to be perfect to be successful. Getting on the bus, walking into a new classroom, introducing themselves to someone, asking a teacher for help, trying a new activity, or making it through a challenging day are all victories worth celebrating.
A simple “I saw how hard you tried today, and I’m proud of you” can mean more than you realize.
