Pediatric Fear
What is Pediatric Fear?
Pediatric fear refers to feelings of worry, nervousness, or distress that children experience when they perceive something as threatening, unfamiliar, or unsafe. Fear is a normal part of childhood development and can help protect children from danger. Common childhood fears may include separation from parents, strangers, loud noises, animals, darkness, medical appointments, school, or unfamiliar situations.
However, when fears become intense, persistent, or interfere with a child’s daily activities, they may indicate that a child needs additional support. A child’s fear can affect participation at school, relationships, sleep, family routines, therapy or medical appointments, and willingness to try new experiences.
Pediatric Fear Signs & Symptoms
Fear can look different depending on a child’s age, personality, communication abilities, and the situation. Parents and caregivers may notice:
- Frequent crying, clinging, or seeking reassurance
- Refusing to separate from a parent or caregiver
- Avoiding certain people, places, objects, or activities
- Fear of going to school, sleeping alone, or being away from home
- Frequent worries about something bad happening
- Tantrums or emotional outbursts when faced with a feared situation
- Difficulty falling asleep, nightmares, or waking during the night
- Physical complaints such as stomachaches, headaches, nausea, or a racing heartbeat
- Shaking, sweating, rapid breathing, or appearing physically tense
- Becoming unusually quiet or withdrawn
- Difficulty concentrating when worried or afraid
- Repeatedly asking questions or seeking reassurance about safety
- Becoming distressed by changes in routines or unfamiliar situations
- Difficulty participating in age-appropriate activities because of fear
Young children may not be able to explain, “I am scared” or describe exactly what is worrying them. Instead, fear may appear through avoidance, challenging behaviors, physical complaints, sleep difficulties, or increased dependence on caregivers.
How Therapy Smarts Supports Children with Fear?
At Therapy Smarts, the goal is to understand what is behind a child’s fear and how it is affecting everyday life. Because every child experiences and communicates emotions differently, support should be individualized to the child and family.
Therapy Smarts’ Mental Health services can help children identify and communicate their emotions, understand what triggers their fears, and develop healthy coping strategies. Depending on the child’s age and needs, therapists may use developmentally appropriate approaches such as play, emotional identification, relaxation techniques, problem-solving, gradual confidence building, and parent education.
When sensory sensitivities, communication challenges, or developmental needs contribute to a child’s distress, Therapy Smarts’ multidisciplinary team can also determine whether services such as Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, ABA, or Psychological Evaluations may be beneficial.
Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process. Therapy can help families learn how to acknowledge a child’s feelings while encouraging healthy coping skills, independence, and confidence rather than allowing fear to consistently limit everyday experiences.
