There is something magical about the Fourth of July. Backyard cookouts, neighborhood parades, sparklers, watermelon, fireworks, and spending time with family create memories that last a lifetime. This year is even more special as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence—our nation’s Semiquincentennial! Communities across the country are marking this historic milestone with larger celebrations, festivals, concerts, and fireworks than ever before.
For many children, these exciting celebrations are full of adventure. For others, the bright lights, booming fireworks, busy crowds, unfamiliar foods, and long days can simply be a lot to take in. With a little planning, families can create a Fourth of July that is enjoyable, successful, and comfortable for everyone.
At Therapy Smarts, we believe every child deserves to experience the joy of celebrating in a way that works best for them. Some children might become over stimulated with the festivities. Overstimulation happens when a child’s brain receives more sensory input than it can comfortably process. When too many sensory experiences occur at once, a child may have difficulty regulating their emotions and body. This can lead to behaviors that are often misunderstood but are actually signs that they need support. It’s important to remember that every child experiences sensory input differently. Some children, including those with sensory processing differences, autism, ADHD, anxiety, or other developmental differences, may be more sensitive to holiday celebrations. However, any child can become overwhelmed after a full day of excitement.
Start the Day with Success
Exciting holidays often begin before breakfast! Keeping as much of your child’s normal routine as possible can make the rest of the day easier.
Try to:
- Eat a protein-filled breakfast.
- Get outside early before the hottest part of the day.
- Build in movement breaks.
- Allow plenty of hydration throughout the day.
- Pack familiar snacks your child already enjoys.
A child who is well-rested, well-fed, and hydrated is often more ready for all the fun ahead.
Create Your Own Fourth of July “Comfort Kit”
Having favorite calming tools nearby can make transitions easier throughout the day.
Some ideas include:
- Noise-reducing headphones
- Favorite fidget toys
- Sunglasses
- Hat with a brim
- Cooling towel
- Water bottle
- Favorite stuffed animal
- Bubble wand
- Small blanket
- Snacks
- Extra clothes
- Sunscreen
- Portable fan
Having these items easily accessible means you won’t need to leave the celebration if your child needs a quick reset.
Fireworks Can Still Be Fun!
Fireworks are one of the highlights of Independence Day—but they can also be one of the most intense parts of the evening. Instead of skipping them altogether, consider planning ahead.
Helpful ideas:
- Arrive early so your child can explore the environment before it becomes crowded.
- Sit farther away from the fireworks launch area.
- Allow your child to watch from inside the car if that’s more comfortable.
- Practice watching fireworks videos at home before the holiday.
- Let your child know when the loud noises will begin.
- Bring favorite headphones and comfort items.
Don’t forget it is perfectly okay if your family watches only five minutes of fireworks instead of thirty. Success looks different for every child.
Navigating Cookouts and Large Crowds
Family barbecues are full of laughter, cousins running everywhere, music playing, dogs barking, and conversations happening all at once. While exciting, all of those experiences happening together can become overwhelming.
Here are a few strategies that can help:
Choose your arrival time
- Arriving a little early allows your child to become familiar with the environment before everyone else arrives.
Find a quiet area
- Locate a shady tree, empty room, hammock, porch, or quiet corner where your child can take a short break.
Respect food preferences
- Cookouts often include unfamiliar foods.
- Bring a few preferred foods along so mealtime stays positive.
Brings things for your child to play with or are familiar to them
- Frisbee
- Sidewalk chalk
- Water balloons
- Bubbles
- Scavenger hunts
- Nature walks
- Their favorite stuffy or lovey (make sure it is located before heading home!)
Spending the Entire Day Outside
Long summer days are wonderful but they can also be exhausting (for the child as well as parent or caregiver). Make sure to pack your sunscreen and a water bottle for everyone and take rests as needed.
Watch for signs your child may need have become overestimated:
- Covering their ears or eyes
- Becoming unusually quiet or withdrawing from activities
- Increased irritability or frequent crying
- Difficulty following directions
- Running away from crowds or seeking a quiet space
- Refusing foods they normally enjoy
- Increased movement, jumping, or fidgeting
- Emotional outbursts or meltdowns
- Fatigue or falling asleep unexpectedly after events
Water Play = Holiday Win
Need a quiet activity before heading to fireworks? Create your own backyard celebration!
Ideas include:
- Water tables
- Splash pads
- Bubble machines
- Sprinklers
- Water balloons
- Ice cube treasure hunts
- Sidewalk chalk with water painting
Water activities provide cooling movement while keeping children engaged.

Remember…Every Child Celebrates Differently
One family may stay for the entire fireworks show. Another may watch from their driveway. Some children may love the parade but skip the cookout. Others may enjoy splashing in the backyard water table while fireworks sparkle in the distance. Every celebration counts. The goal isn’t to make your child fit the holiday. The goal is to make the holiday fit your child. Those are often the memories that become the most meaningful.

Every child grows and develops at their own pace, but pediatric milestones help parents understand if their child is on track with important skills like communication, movement, play, learning, and social-emotional development. Recognizing red flags early can make a big difference in getting children the support they need to grow, learn, and thrive. Check your child’s progress with our Developmental Milestone Checklist and learn when it may be time to reach out for help.
