Pediatric Dandy-Walker SyndromeTherapy in Durham & Chapel Hill

What is Dandy-Walker Syndrome?

Dandy-Walker syndrome is a congenital brain malformation that affects the cerebellum, the area of the brain responsible for movement, balance, and coordination. Children with Dandy-Walker syndrome may experience developmental delays, muscle weakness, balance difficulties, poor coordination, low muscle tone, and challenges with gross motor skills.

Every child with Dandy-Walker syndrome is unique, and symptoms can range from mild to more significant. Early intervention and pediatric physical therapy can play an important role in supporting a child’s physical development and overall quality of life.

Pediatric Dandy-Walker Syndrome Signs & Symptoms

Every Child is different, but some common signs may include:

    • Delayed crawling and walking
    • Balance problems
    • Stiff muscles
    • Trouble with fine motor skills (picking up small objects, writing)

How Therapy Smarts Supports Children with Dandy-Walker Syndrome

Early intervention is extremely important. Pediatric therapy can help children improve mobility, communication, independence, and confidence. At Therapy Smarts, our multidisciplinary team in Durham and Chapel Hill works together to create a customized “roadmap” that helps your child hit their milestones and gain independence.

Children with Dandy–Walker syndrome may experience challenges with balance, coordination, muscle strength, motor planning, speech, feeding, sensory processing, and developmental milestones. Early intervention through pediatric therapy services can help children build important life skills, improve independence, and gain confidence as they grow.

Children with Dandy-Walker Syndrome may benefit from: (Physical Therapy)

  • Balance and coordination
  • Core strength and posture
  • Walking and mobility skills
  • Muscle strength and endurance
  • Gross motor milestones like crawling, standing, stair climbing, and jumping
  • Safety awareness and body control

Our pediatric physical therapists use fun, play-based activities in our sensory gyms to help children build strength, confidence, and independence while reaching important developmental milestones. Physical Therapy at Therapy Smarts is tailored to meet children where they are developmentally while encouraging continued progress.

Enhancing Communication and Feeding (Speech Therapy)

Communication is the bridge to connection. Because children with Dandy-Walker Syndrome often face challenges with speech clarity or language delays, our Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide:

  • Oral Motor Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the tongue and jaw for clearer speech.

  • Total Communication Support: Using signs, gestures, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to reduce frustration while verbal speech develops.

  • Feeding Therapy: Specialized support for chewing and swallowing safety, ensuring your child gets the nutrition they need to thrive.

Developing Independence and Fine Motor Skills (Occupational Therapy)

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs) focus on “the job of being a kid.” We help children master the daily skills they need for home and school, including:

  • Fine Motor Coordination: Strengthening small hand muscles for writing, using scissors, or buttoning clothes.

  • Self-Care Skills: Practical training for feeding themselves, dressing, and grooming.

  • Sensory Integration: Helping children process information from their environment so they can stay focused and calm in the classroom.

Social and Behavioral Growth (ABA Therapy & Mental Health Support)

For children who need extra support with social cues or behavioral regulation, our ABA and Mental Health teams offer a supportive environment to:

  • Build positive social interactions with peers.

  • Increase attention span and classroom readiness.

  • Support emotional regulation and confidence-building.
