Department Highlight: Therapy Smarts Speech Therapy Department, 80.5 Years of Experience and a Passion for Helping Kids Find Their Voice

At Therapy Smarts, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to communicate, connect, and thrive. That’s why our speech therapy team, made up of highly trained Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) — brings a combined 80.5 years of experience to supporting children’s communication development. With diverse expertise spanning articulation, language, social communication, fluency, feeding & oral motor skills, and more, our team provides compassionate, evidence-based care for kids across the Triangle.

Our therapists are part of a multidisciplinary pediatric clinic serving children in Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding communities — offering speech therapy alongside occupational therapy, physical therapy, mental health counseling, and ABA services.

When Should I Think About Starting Speech Therapy?

Every child develops at their own pace, but there are communication milestones that can help guide families on what to watch for as children grow. Knowing these developmental markers can make all the difference in identifying when additional support might help your child flourish.

Typical Communication Milestones

Here are just a few markers that might prompt an evaluation:

  • By 12 months: Uses single words or gestures to communicate
  • By 18 months: Uses several single words consistently
  • By 24 months: Combines two words (e.g., “more juice”)
  • By 36 months: Easily understood by people outside the family
If your child is not hitting these or shows persistent communication challenges — like difficulty being understood, limited vocabulary growth, or ongoing frustration when trying to communicate, a speech evaluation may be helpful.

Our therapists look at the whole child in every visit, supporting not just sounds and words but also language comprehension, social communication, and confidence in everyday interactions.

What Speech Therapy Can Help With

At Therapy Smarts, our pediatric speech therapy focuses on functional communication skills to help children:

  • Boost academic participation and confidence

Your child’s therapy plan is personalized and play-based, making learning feel fun and meaningful.
