Strategies from Triple-P
Triple-P has a number of core principals designed to encapsulate “positive parenting”. These tenets include:
- Safe & Engaging Environments: Building spaces that are supervised and safe— able to engage children of all ages with curiosity.
- Positive Learning Environment: Introduces the parent as a child’s first teacher, learning to respond to their questions positively while encouraging them to problem-solve on their own.
- Assertive Discipline: The program advises parents on effective means of discipline (setting ground rules, presenting logical consequences, and using time-outs impactfully) while avoiding ineffective means (shouting, physical punishment).
- Realistic Expectations: This helps parents understand what is reasonable for children to accomplish at a certain age, giving them greater insight and understanding around their capabilities.
- Self-Care for Parents: This element provides key strategies for parents and caregivers to be mindful of their own needs and maintain self-esteem.
